Supple fiction formed in able hands, History of Wolves delivers Emily Fridlund to the doorstep of literature’s beau monde I think she’ll find a good home there.Game Description: New dual-belt friction-free optimized mechanism. Its otherworldly winter escapism is just right for mid-season stir crazy, and a dose of crime drama in the book’s second half grounds enough for wider readability, with Fridlund’s observation on childhood, religion and family reaching a climax in the final chapters after simmering expertly through its first 150-odd pages. It’s hard to decide whether the novel’s faults are deliberate defiance of genre or willful creativity, but taken as a whole, Fridlund’s History of Wolves is lyrical and beautiful. But Fridlund’s fragmented style becomes a little frantic in the waning pages, and some worthwhile plotlines are left behind in the fray. Read with patience and good focus, in bulk the book’s challenges are surmountable. The lid blows when Patra and Paul are joined by father Leo and time catapults with a start into something sinister.ĭespite the novel’s fluidity, standout scenes are written as vividly imagined tableau: History of Wolves seems an inevitable extension of the author’s work in short fiction and essay. Low-boiling paranoia propels Fridlund’s well-crafted plot. Fridlund also rounds up the best of John Hughes’s high school stereotypes to give Linda’s personal life some colour, somehow managing to avoid anything cliché in its description. It’s set just south of us, but our commonalities with the Upper Great Lakes will help History of Wolves resonate with many Canadian readers: distinct seasons, described brilliantly lakeside wildlife small-town sport and the melancholic undercurrent of rural life. She looks both at and through Linda’s character to challenge our notion of childhood innocence and expose the ugly byproduct of a kid who hasn’t been kept busy enough to know better than being selfish. Any discord Linda’s temponaut narration causes in History of Wolves finds harmony when the two meet at its climax – a tragedy, or a crime, or a bit of Kitty Genovese, depending which Linda you ask.įridlund’s wonderland defies and embodies literary fiction, creating an elasticized world that’s easy to occupy, but flush with unsettling realities alien to us all. Linda’s voice echoes by turns from either her later, settled-down, self or the hippies’ kid who in adolescence happened upon a not-quite-right family across the way. Planted on either side of the lake, Fridlund sets bare the contrast between Linda’s liberal upbringing and the Gardners’ more zealous approach Paul, in the care of each, plays pawn. If that seems like a Victorian throwback, it’s made friends with some modern company in History of Wolves, too: the book dips into spirituality, psychology and a few daddy issues for good measure. Patra and Paul, mother and son, live a paddle ride away from Linda’s family cabin and over time the girl becomes a well-paid companion for Paul, though Patra prefers the term governess. Linda, who could be either a sociopath or the most interesting kid I know, chronicles life on the lake and her obsession with its wilderness: its wolves especially but also its newest family, the Gardners. Linda is a kid until she is an ageless adult and then she is a teenager before the whole thing turns right round and back again – but in Fridlund’s world none of that time-twisting matters much. Madeline to some, Linda to many, Mattie among a special few, she was born to anonymous beatniks on a Northern Minnesota commune before its reigning free spirits drifted and left her in the care of two kinda-in-theory, not-much-in-practice parents. Enter Fridlund, who’s stocked her debut with a no-nonsense narrator living in a once-was commune, making friends with a could-be cult, all on the frontier of a wilderness begging to be illustrated in the author’s rich prose. Ending things there would’ve been a shame for my reading pile, at least, perhaps to Fridlund herself, and maybe also the fans of Jane Urquhart and Carol Shields who’ve been hungry for their next poetic genre-bender. History of Wolves began life as an award-winning short story. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
